Joel Magalnick

Joel Magalnick, co-thinker of Starting Point Studios

Joel Magalnick has worked at the confluence of content design and user experience since the early 2000s. Joel has run a news media company, where he introduced the organization to the modern web, content management, and automated workflows. Much of his work during his 13-year tenure involved article writing, instructional documentation, and digitally laying out newspapers and guidebooks using industry-standard tools (i.e., Adobe InDesign).

Joel’s writing history also includes developing researched case studies for clients, scripting podcast series for companies such as Microsoft, and creating content for infographics and other types of long- and short-form content.

Joel has an innate curiosity that allows him to ask critical questions and view a challenge from multiple angles. He digs deep when he researches articles, designs digital products, develops content strategies, or establishes a company’s unique value proposition. Joel’s customer-first approach means every engagement is a learning experience: understanding the needs of the intended audience, collaborating across disciplines, and diving into subject matter to gain as much expertise as possible.

Joel has also created instructional content, including developing a curriculum for a digital communications class he taught at a college in Central Washington as well as workshops in areas as diverse as writing, design, and business strategy. As an instructor at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, Joel teaches information architecture and user experience design to undergraduate students.
